In the wake of the government’s decision to impose Section 144 in the city’s Red Zone areas, the Sindh United Party (SUP) has changed the venue of its anti-corruption rally from Karachi to Hyderabad.
This was announced by SUP Chief Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah at a press conference held at the party’s headquarters, Haider Manzil, on Tuesday. “The government has imposed Section 144 only to thwart our rally. The rulers are afraid of our strength and by using their right of power, they have forced us to either confront them by staging the rally in Karachi or to give away our cause,” said Shah.
“However, we are a peace-loving party and the true followers of the Sufi teachings of our land, hence, we decided to change the venue.” The demonstration in Karachi was initially scheduled for March 26 and was to start from the Quaid-e-Azam’s Mausoleum and culminate at the Tibet Centre. The rally, said the SUP chief, was aimed at raising a voice against corruption, terrorism and the security situation in Sindh and to warn the rulers that people throughout the province were willing to mobilise against their malpractices and dishonesty.
In this connection, he added, the SUP had chalked out a strategy for motivating the masses and its leaders would be visiting every district of Sindh over a six-month period. “Once we are done with this part of the programme, we will organise demonstrations in the city in August.”
The SUP chief said they had also approached nationalist parties of Balochistan to join in the fight against terrorism and corruption, adding that the SUP had already formed an alliance with the Balochistan National Party – Mengal.
