As the investigation into the mysterious death of Javed Khanani, a director of the Khanani and Kalia money-changers group, continued on Monday, labourers rounded up from a building where the incident had taken place were released.

Khanani died after apparently falling from an under-construction building in Mohammad Ali Society of the Bahadurabad area on Sunday. He had been facing money-laundering charges.

According to the Gulshan-e-Iqbal SSP, the labourers were having lunch when the incident took place.

He said the businessman’s body was examined at his residence and Assistant Police Surgeon Dr Kaleem described electrocution as the cause of death in his report.

However, the police officer said the body could not be examined properly, and if a postmortem examination had been conducted, it would have confirmed the number of the broken bones in the victim’s body.

Hospital sources had earlier said that Khanani was dead when he was brought to the emergency department of a hospital. His attendants did not allow a complete examination and took the body home, they added.

The money-changers group has been under scrutiny by the FIA since 2008 over money-laundering and fraud allegations.
