ISLAMABAD: The PPP putting aside politics has decided to back the government on the issue of 24th Constitutional Amendment in the National Assembly, aiming at giving a right to make an appeal in the Supreme Court against its decisions in suo motu cases.

“Though we have reservations on the timing of bringing the amendment at this time that only serves the purpose in favour of the government yet we have decided to support the amendment as it was on the agenda of the PPP manifesto,” said Senator Farhatullah Babar while talking to The News on Friday.

Another opposition party, the PTI had already announced to oppose the amendment as they believe that it only serves the purpose of saving the prime minister.

Senator Farhatullah Babar said the PPP had already proposed to streamline the procedure of suo motu and had also moved a resolution in this regard for streamlining the suo motu powers in the Senate but the Nawaz Sharif government has opposed the resolution. “But now government itself is bringing the amendment in this regard, so we have decided to support it as it was already a part of the PPP manifesto,” he added.

The government has introduced the amendment in the Constitution early this week in the National Assembly providing a right of appeal against the suo motu decisions of the Supreme Court.
