Police suspect involvement of a banned outfit; cop killed while resisting robbery

A member of the Shia community and a policeman were killed in separate attacks in the city on Friday.

Murtaza Raza, 21, a student of the University of Karachi was gunned down and two others, Shahid Hussain and Ahsan Ali, were injured in an attack near a Super Store in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Block-4.

SHO Nawaz Chattah said police rushed to the scene and found three young men lying injured there.

He added that they were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where Murtaza succumbed to his injuries while Shahid and Ahsan were still under treatment.

The officer said Murtaza and his two friends were members of the Shia community. They lived in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and studied at the University of Karachi.

They were returning home after attending their classes in the evening when two men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them.

Murtaza had suffered bullet wounds to his chest. Shahid was hit by a bullet near his neck and Ahsan suffered a bullet wound to his shoulder

The officer said the attackers had used a 9mm pistol and five spent bullet shells were found at the scene and sent to the forensic division.

Police investigators said a banned outfit could have been behind the attack. They added that they checking if the CCTV footage of the attack was available so that the faces of the attackers could be identified.

Members of the Shia community staged a protest after the incident and demanded the arrest of the killers.

Cop killed

A police constable was gunned down near a sweets shop in North Karachi’s Block-11B.  SSP Central Muqadas Haider said constable Rizwan Ahmed, 32, was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he died.

Rizwan was posted at the Sindh police’s Crime Branch and lived in Khawaja Ajmer Nagri. He had arrived in the area to purchase sweets in the evening and was shot dead by two robbers riding a motorcycle while he was returning.

The constable tried to resist the robbers and they opened fire. A bullet hit Rizwan in his lower torso.

The SSP said the case appeared to be a robbery attempt but other aspects would also be investigated.
