Musharraf says his fate bars martial law
ISLAMABAD: Former Chief of the Army Staff and fourth dictator General Pervez Musharraf has said that the Pakistan Army is witnessing what he is facing and what is happening to him and thus it will never intervene and martial law is not an option. General Musharraf ‘proposed’ Supreme Court’s role in near future.
During an interview on October 29, 2016, General Musharraf also said though martial law is not an option, an interim government should come through the Supreme Court’s help in a way that the apex court amends Constitution to give longer life to the interim government.
“There is no development in the country. Corruption is touching peaks. What the nation can do? There are no checks and balances in the Constitution. People look towards the army. But why the army should take any such step?” General Musharraf said adding “Pak Army is witnessing what is happening to me and what I am facing.”
The anchorperson questioned: “So your understanding is that army is not going to intervene.” General Musharraf responded, “Yes, Pak Army will not impose martial law. I don’t think so. Times of martial laws have gone.”
Ex-COAS General Musharraf further said that the Supreme Court will have to come out of sleeping mode for bringing about a change. “An interim government may come in. This arrangement will be constitutional. The Supreme Court should make an amendment extending the tenure of such an interim government from three months to a longer period so things can be really improved.”
