District South’s garbage disposal outsourced to Chinese firm

The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board signed an agreement with a Chinese firm on Wednesday for the transferring and disposal of municipal waste generated in the South district of Karachi through mechanical and swift means.

The ceremony to sign the agreement was held at the office of provincial local government minister Jam Khan Shoro. The Agreement was co-signed by SSWMB managing director and the president of the Chinese firm S Changyi Kangjie Sanitation Engineering Company Limited.

District Municipal Corporation South chairman Maik Fayyaz was also present on the occasion.

The minister said under the agreement, the Chinese firm would be responsible for the lifting and disposal of 491,590 metric tonnes municipal waste on an annual basis using mechanical means.

The Chinese firm would use machines for municipal sweeping on all streets, alleys, side roads, and main roads in the South district of the city.

The Chinese companies would use its system and resources to collect municipal waste from every household of the district to dump it at special community dustbins and later to take it to the garbage transfer stations for final disposal.

The garbage transfer station for the South district will be set up near Mewashah graveyard and later six more will built for the disposal of municipal waste of the entire city.

Speaking on the occasion, the South district chairman appreciated the move and said it would be helpful in managing municipal affairs.

He said the South district administration would cooperate with the Chinese firm for the disposal of garbage.
