HARIPUR: The district head of Pakistan Sunni Tehreek (PST) Maulana Shaukat Nawaz was gunned down in Makhan Colony in the limits of City Police Station here on Sunday, police officials said.

Chanzeb, brother of Maulana Shaukat Nawaz, told the police that his brother was Imam of Masjid Bakhtawar in Mohalla Gajjal. He said unidentified assailants opened fire on him after he left for the mosque from their home in Makhan Colony to lead Fajr prayers. He said his brother received several bullets in his body and died on the spot.

The City Police registered a case against unknown attackers and started an investigation. According to the complainant, their family had enmity back in the village. However, he did not nominate any one for the murder of the prayer leader.

Meanwhile, activists of Pakistan Sunni Tehreek staged protest and blocked the road against the killing of their president.  They threatened to launch province-wide protest if the killers were not arrested within the next 24 hours.
