Sophisticated weapons

For a long time, the government has been harping on about the need for sophisticated weapons for the police. At present, the police use the Kalashnikov on the job. This weapon is the most popular assault rifle in a lot of countries.

So why does the government think that there is a need for a more sophisticated weapon? Why doesn’t the government just give full authority to the police to carry out the jobs using the weapons currently in use? Giving autonomy to the police is the right thing to do otherwise the ‘need for sophisticated weapons’ mantra is fated to continue without any fruitful results.
