KARACHI: The DIG of East Range, Munir Ahmed Shaikh, took a serious notice of the custodial death of an innocent citizen and dismissed two officials of the Sukhan Police Station on Wednesday.
He also ordered registration of a murder case against the station house officer (SHO) and the station investigation officer (SIO). He directed appointment of a senior police official to investigate into the matter.
Talking to The News, DIG Shaikh said that a young man, Asad, died in police custody two months ago. However, SHO Mithal and SIO Zafar Iqbal lied to their superiors that the man had died a natural death. Taking notice of the death, the DIG had formed an investigation team and a medical board to ascertain the facts behind the incident.
During the course of the investigation, the team went through the medical report, FIRs and investigation details and found that the two police officials using their influence showed in the medical report that Asad had not died of torture.
But after a fresh examination of the body, the investigators learnt that the victim lost his life after he was tortured.
DIG Shaikh said that on checking the FIRs allegedly lodged by one Chaudhry Shabbir at the Sukhan Police Station, it was found that Asad was not nominated in the cases. The victim was in fact picked up by the cops and tortured. The DIG added that a murder case under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code had been lodged against the two officials.
