Karachi

An Accountability Court (AC), on Friday, granted a one-day remand of the city's matric board chairman to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after the IO informed the bench that he was to be presented before a court in Hyderabad. Board of Secondary Education Karachi’s chairman Anwar Ahmed Zai was arrested by NAB a day earlier on charges of corruption, illegal appointments and out-of-turn promotions.

He was alleged to have committed the crimes during his time as chairman Board of Intermediate Education Karachi and in-charge of examination boards in Mirpurkhas. A NAB official said Zai would also be investigated for result tempering during his time at different boards and centres.

Zai served as deputy director and district education officer Mirpurkhas, in 1990 he was appointed director education Karachi. He then went on to serve as additional secretary education, Sindh, additional secretary development finance and planning, and additional secretary academics.

Also a playwright, Zai has not less than 100 full-length dramas and plays to his credit, besides also having penned seven books.

On the other hand, a supplementary charge-sheet was submitted to the provincial anti-corruption court (ATC) against officials of the BIEK, Adeel Anwar and Dabeer Ahmed, also over charges of result tempering.

Jailed for 21 years

An ATC awarded 21 years imprisonment to a man, Owais, for possession of explosive materials and illicit weapons. Owais was arrested in 2015 by the Ferozabad police.

The court observed that the prosecution had proved the charges, and handed down seven years for possession of illegal arms and 14 for possession of explosive materials to be used in terrorist activities.

MQM men, other remands

A local court remanded two workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rehanuddin and Rehan to the police on physical remand for the murder of a political opponent.

The custody of three accused Rizwan, Naeem and Tahir was handed over to the police on a three-day physical remand, by judicial magistrate (East).
