The recent statement about Balochistan by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is highly unbecoming of an elected prime minister. It is tantamount to intervening in the internal affairs of Pakistan. It also gives credence to rumours of Indian involvement in Balochistan. The people of Balochistan have rightly responded by organising rallies to condemn Modi’s statement.
Pakistan and India have spent seven decades in acrimony over the Kashmir issue. It is time the Indian leadership recognised the gravity of the Kashmir conflict and that it cannot be suppressed by use of brutal force every now and then. Instead of diverting the world’s attention from the Kashmir dispute, the Indian prime minister should pay heed to the demands and grievances of the poor Kashmiris.
