Rich tributes paid to Riphah University’s founding chancellor

Riphah International University organised a full reference ceremony in memory of its founding chancellor late Major General (r) Muhammad Zulfiqar Ali Khan at Almizan Campus here.

A large number of people belonging to various walks of life including medical professionals, educationists, friends and family members of the late general attended the reference.

Rich tributes were paid to Major General (r) Muhammad Zulfiqar Ali Khan for his services to the medical and education sectors. Besides establishing Riphah International University and Islamic International Medical College Trust (IIMCT) he has to his credit the setting up of Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC)/National Institute of Heart Diseases (NIHD), Hearts International Hospital and Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH). Major General (r) Muhammad Zulfiqar Ali Khan died on 6 July 2016 in Islamabad.

He was an internationally renowned cardiologist and a medical personality of unquestionable integrity with exceptional calibre. He graduated from King Edward Medical College, Lahore and got trained and practiced the cutting edge of cardiology in England for 13 years. The urge and enthusiasm of developing and establishing proper medical care for patients suffering from heart diseases, in the form of modern day cardiology and cardiac surgery brought him to Pakistan and he joined Army Medical Corps as cardiologist. The nucleus of a cardiac centre was available to him in Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, as a stage to build on. His untiring efforts and persuasive powers, soon convinced the appropriate higher ups for developing a state of the art, cardiac institute, serving not only personnel of armed forces and federal government servants, but public at large including the very poor and non-affording patients.

Prof. Dr. Anis Ahmed, vice chancellor of Riphah International University welcomed the guests at the reference. He said it was aim of Major General (r) Zulfiqar Ali Khan to build an institute which is not only most modern in technological resources but also based on Islamic ethical values and principles. He said that it was due to his day and night efforts that today several philanthropic projects are running for the welfare of the people.
