The Islamabad Devcom Centennial Leo Club (IDCLC) will focus on its milestone initiative the ‘zero food waste’ plan for the Islamabad Capital Territory. The statistical analysis is being done after a comprehensive survey of the banquets, wedding halls, hotels and fast foods.

This was stated by president IDCLC Shaaref Munir, while speaking at the first Installation ceremony of his club, at the Islamabad Club. The District Governor Lions Club International Sitara Sitwat presided over the ceremony and installed the new IDCLC cabinet. Sanaullah Aman, the Member Environment and Financial Adviser, Capital Development Authority (CDA), was the chief guest who installed the executive officers and members of the club. The Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan) Executive Director and Adviser IDCLC Munir Ahmed was the guest of honour on the occasion.

The IDCLC president said that we would vigorously take awareness, stakeholder mobilisation and initiate local and national legislation process to reduce food waste mainly focusing on the food outlets in the Islamabad Capital Territory. “The other focused areas would be engaging youth in environmental conservation with the support of the CDA Member Environment, social and community services in collaboration with other partners and district management. We believe in the role of youth in social development, community services and public policy reforms and its implementation. Without uplifting the marginalised communities, we cannot make our society socially equitable, and a just society. We need to put more resources and efforts to enhance the social growth of the marginalised youth,” he said.

The Lions Club International District Governor Sitara Sitwat strongly supported the five point annual programme of the Islamabad Devcom Centennial Leo Club. She said the ‘zero food waste’ should be the priority agenda of all stakeholders especially the district management should take serious action on ground. Every day we waste food worth of millions of rupees that can feed thousands of people but there carelessness on the part of citizens, and no mechanism available to fine and curb the food waste, she said.

She hoped that the ‘Zero food waste for ICT’ would come up with example work and develop some system and mechanism at least for the Islamabad Capital Territory. She reaffirmed her full support on behalf of the Lions Clubs in her district.

Sanaullah Aman, the CDA Member Environment and Financial Adviser, speaking on the occasion said that the CDA always encourage youth groups and educational institutions to be part of the environmental conservation and improvement. The sustainable development of the federal capital is not possibly with the participation of youth as they have to carry the future course of city development.

He said the proactive, socially sensitive and environmentally conscious youth is an asset of the society. We need to encourage them for their initiatives and provide level playing field to have their real participation in engaging the other citizens groups and stakeholders. He assured his full support to make the city’s environment more clean and green.
