Pakistan to unveil Rs100bn EV policy today
Rs100 billion will be allocated in subsidies and imposing levy on ICE vehicles to support transition
ISLAMABAD: The federal government will unveil its National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30 on Thursday (today), setting the country on a bold path toward clean mobility, energy efficiency and industrial self-reliance.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan will announce the policy, which earmarks over Rs100 billion in subsidies and introduces a new levy on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to fund the transition.
The policy launches with a Rs9 billion allocation in FY2025-26 to support 116,053 e-bikes and 3,171 e-rickshaws via a fully digital platform. A 25pc quota will ensure female riders benefit from the program, part of a broader push to make electric mobility inclusive and affordable.
The NEV Policy targets 30pc electric vehicle sales by 2030, aiming to reduce 4.5 million tons of CO emissions, save US$1 billion in fuel imports annually, and tap into Pakistan’s 126 TWh surplus electricity. It also strengthens local EV production through tariff protections, targeting 90pc localization in 2-3 wheelers by 2026.
