Bilateral no more
This letter refers to the news report ‘Trump ready to assist in Kashmir dispute resolution between Pakistan and India: State Dept’ (June 11, 2025). Trump has been offering his assistance, which Pakistan welcomes, but India rebuffs, insisting that it is a bilateral issue. This indifference is evident in India’s actions, such as putting the internationally recognised Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan in abeyance. Pakistan's reciprocal action on the Simla Agreement brings the Kashmir issue to the world stage, making it a bilateral issue no longer. No matter how big of a country India is, it cannot dictate terms to any other country, let alone Pakistan, with which it has never had normalised relations.
The ongoing tension between India and Pakistan over Kashmir has drawn international attention, highlighting the need for a peaceful resolution. The involvement of global powers and organisations could play a crucial role in mediating the conflict and ensuring stability in the region. Both nations must consider the broader implications of their actions and work towards a sustainable and mutually beneficial solution.
