One bank, one bus
The chronic transport issue faced by University of Karachi (KU) students remains a serious barrier to equitable access to higher education. Thousands of students, particularly from distant or underserved areas, struggle daily due to the lack of affordable, safe and reliable transport options. The few buses that do operate are insufficient, overcrowded and often unsafe. In response to this growing crisis, I would like to propose a practical and socially responsible initiative: ‘One Bank, One Bus’. Under this plan, each commercial bank operating in Karachi may be encouraged – or required through CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) frameworks – to sponsor and maintain one university bus. With over 30 scheduled banks in the city, this could immediately add a significant number of buses to KU’s fleet.
Such a partnership would not only ease the burden on students but also enhance the public image of the banking sector through meaningful community engagement. The State Bank of Pakistan and Higher Education Commission can play a pivotal coordinating role in institutionalising this effort. The transport crisis at KU is no longer a student-only issue, but a reflection of how society supports its young people in their pursuit of education. I urge stakeholders to consider and act upon this proposal.
