LAHORE

Digging by Wasa and PTCL along the Orange Line route created severe traffic jams on Railway Road, Mecleod Road and Allama Iqbal Road and its linking arteries for many hours on Monday.

People with fasting got stuck on these roads for over three hours. The officers of City traffic police had stopped the officials and officers of Wasa and PTCL from digging ditches near Haji Camp but they dug it up and left it unattended. As a result, the pressure of traffic increased on all linking arteries including Shimla Hill, Railway station, Davis Road, Edgerton Road and Abbot Road.

Long queues of vehicles were witnessed. People in search of other ways but resulted into further traffic jam.

On the other hand, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Tayyab Hafeez Cheema deployed extra Wardens at Shimla Hill, Davis Road and other adjacent roads for smooth flow of traffic. The traffic police filled both the ditches in the presence of their boss and insured smooth flow of traffic.

The CTO stated that in future FIR would be lodged if any department dig ditches at any main road. Had the department concerned informed about digging ditches in advance, the traffic and railway police could have better managed the traffic mess, CTO remarked.

Wasa spokesman wasn’t available for comments despite repeated attempts were made at his cellphone.
