Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has said the true struggle for development lies in improving the quality of public life.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 29th Chest Pain Unit of the Sindh Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (SICVD) in Gulshan-e-Hadid on Monday, he noted that the facility marked a significant achievement under the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) leadership. It was the 29th cardiac unit in Sindh and the 19th in Karachi, he said.
He stated that the new unit would play a crucial role in saving the lives of heart patients in emergencies, particularly by reducing the time it takes to receive treatment. "Previously, it took around an hour to one hour and a half for patients to reach the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), but in cardiac emergencies, every minute counted," he said. "Our aim, as per the PPP manifesto, is to deliver healthcare facilities at people’s doorsteps."
The mayor added that the longstanding demand of residents in Malir had been fulfilled due to the efforts of the local leadership. He highlighted that the unit had been established by transforming a previously vacant Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) building into a satellite SICVD centre due to efforts of elected representatives and union committee chairmen.
Also present at the inauguration were Karachi Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, MPA Sajid Jokhio, Deputy Parliamentary Leader in the City Council Dil Muhammad and other party officials.
The mayor stressed that the institutions were not created merely by constructing buildings, but by making them functional and effective. He appreciated the dedication of those working to improve urban services and reiterated the administration’s commitment to resolving public issues.
Wahab praised the Pakistan Army for its brave response to Indian aggression both on the battlefield and on the diplomatic front. "Pakistan is a peace-loving nation that does not yield to pressure and stands united in the face of threats," he said, congratulating the nation on this success.
Looking ahead, he announced that Abdul Salam Soomro Park project had been included in the budget, a 50-bed hospital and an eight-lane flyover would be completed soon, and the provincial government was constructing the Stock Exchange Parking Road.
He added that resolving issues at the Pakistan Steel Mills would help address the area's water crisis. He said that under the vision of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the PPP remained committed to enhancing civic amenities. “True development is not just about infrastructure but about improving people’s lives—and these initiatives will lead to substantial health benefits for the residents,” he said.
