ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court’s (SC) constitutional bench on Thursday referred the contempt of court case against former PTI chairman Imran Khan to a regular bench.
A five-member constitutional bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, heard the contempt case against PTI founder Imran Khan. The government had filed a contempt petition in June 2022 against the PTI founder for allegedly violating court orders by extending the long march route four kilometers beyond the designated area to the Jinnah Avenue.
The government had contended that the participants in the long march blocked roads, causing hardship to the citizens.
On Thursday, during the course of hearing, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail asked Imran Khan’s counsel, Salman Akram Raja, whether the case should be before the constitutional bench or a regular bench. Raja replied that it did not involve any constitutional issues and requested it be sent to a regular bench. The Additional Attorney General also supported this, referencing a previous contempt case on reserved seats that had been sent to a regular bench. The court then accepted the request and referred the case to a regular bench.
