Sindh police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon on Monday chaired a meeting at the Central Police Office (CPO) Karachi where several decisions were taken regarding formation of units of the provincial police.
The meeting, which was attended by Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho, DIGs of Traffic Karachi, Headquarters Sindh and all SPs Traffic of Karachi, also decided to modernise the traffic police by aligning it with the requirements of the present era.
A traffic police official gave a briefing to the participants of the meetings on traffic accidents, their prevention and comprehensive reforms in this regard. The SOP prepared by the Sindh government is being implemented and the owners of heavy transport vehicles are cooperating, the meeting was told.
The meeting decided that in the next few days, the faceless e-ticket challan facility will be introduced in Karachi for the convenience of the public. Now the need is that the traffic police should also be equipped with the required facilities and developed on modern lines.
All the relevant government institutions and all the stockholders of the city are in touch with regard to the implementation and cooperation of traffic rules, said Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho.
He said regular meetings are also held in this regard at the Karachi Police Office. Traffic police is our face that is in direct contact with the public, Sindh IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon said and added that, providing the faceless e-ticket challan facility to homes for violation of traffic rules will prove to be a good step. Moreover, speedometers and speed guns will be purchased to determine the speed of vehicles. There is a need to formulate a coordinated strategy to enforce traffic rules and prevent accidents, the IGP said.
He further stated that fitness verification by the Transport Department and establishment of driving training schools by the Sindh Police will gradually bring about a better change in the traffic system.
All SPs should deploy traffic-friendly and public-friendly officers and personnel in the field, IGP Memon said and called for taking care of personnel on duty in extreme heat and difficult conditions.
