Industry leader says textile sector could benefit from US tariff shifts
KARACHI: Pakistan’s overall exports, particularly in the textile sector, are expected to benefit from America’s new tariff policy.
This was said by Shaikh Shafiq Jhok Wala, chief coordinator of the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA), while speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of the 29th Textile Asia 2025 exhibition, held on Saturday at the Expo Centre, Karachi.
He said the imposition of heavy tariffs on China and other countries by the US administration would create increased demand for textiles, garments and various other products in the American market. This shift, he noted, presents a significant opportunity for Pakistani companies to expand their textile and garment exports to the US.
“The changing international trade climate is undoubtedly challenging, but it is likely to prove favourable for Pakistan, its industries and export growth,” he added.
He further added that the Pakistani government is working to facilitate Chinese and Vietnamese companies in setting up industrial units in Pakistan’s special economic zones. These companies, in collaboration with local investors and industries, will manufacture made-in-Pakistan products, including textile goods, for export under their own brands.
“This collaboration could help increase Pakistan’s exports to as much as $35 billion over the next few years, with the textile sector playing a leading role,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Project Director of Textile Asia Muhammad Uzair Nizam said the overwhelming participation of foreign delegates and national business leaders in the trade fair reflected the growing business potential and investment climate in Pakistan.
He added that the objective of the trade fair is to enhance the contribution of the textile sector to the national GDP through technological advancement, innovation and sustainable development.
