Mayor orders timely completion of development projects
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has directed that all development projects should be completed within their designated time frame and warned that the officers failing to perform their duties will be removed from their positions.
He emphasised the need for accelerating the pace of development work stating that 250 schemes must be completed within the current fiscal year.
Addressing a high-level meeting of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) engineering department, Wahab expressed dissatisfaction at the department’s performance.
The meeting was attended by KMC Metropolitan Commissioner Afzal Zaidi, Finance Adviser Gulzar Ali Abro, Works Director General Tariq Mughal, chief engineers from various districts, and other relevant officials.
The mayor stressed that development work must be visible on ground, noting that funds for all projects were available and no excuses would be accepted over delays. He warned that contractors failing to meet deadlines would have their contracts cancelled and they would be blacklisted.
He reiterated that implementing development schemes was the engineering department’s responsibility and instructed the director general to form a dedicated team, ensuring that non-compliant officers were reported for disciplinary action.
He highlighted that in line with the vision of the Pakistan Peoples Party and directives of its chairman Bilawal Bhutto, efforts were under way to improve the city and prioritise public welfare projects.
He maintained that the KMC had sufficient funds and there were no financial hurdles in the projects’ completion.
The mayor further instructed that the completed projects be opened for the public immediately after their inauguration. He also ordered the Karimabad Underpass to be completed expeditely in order to ease public inconvenience.
Additionally, he announced that the construction on the Korangi Bridge would begin immediately after the Eid and arrangements were being made to build a bridge over the Mehran Town railway line. He said the construction would commence as soon as the tender process concluded.
The mayor emphasised that all the ongoing development projects under the Competitive & Livable City of Karachi (CLICK) initiative must be completed within the scheduled timeframe.
