Seismic shift?

This letter refers to the news report ‘Zelensky says Trump's support still 'crucial'’ (March 1, 2025). The scenes the world witnessed in the Oval Office last month represent an unprecedented shift in diplomacy from the highest office of a self-proclaimed democracy. Both Trump and JD Vance directed sharp insults at Ukraine's president, including a remark by a reporter questioning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's choice of attire, which left seasoned journalists and analysts stunned. Their unrestrained confrontation unfolded openly before the cameras.

The meeting marked a low point in diplomatic decorum and civility. While the long-term impact of this seismic shift in US policy remains uncertain, one thing is evident: the global order is evolving, and traditional alliances in international politics are fading. Europe, as a collective of smaller nations, will need to strengthen its internal alliances to maintain relevance and ensure survival, independent of US support.
