LAHORE:The Punjab Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) organised its annual drug-burning ceremony in Sheikhupura, with ANF Director General Major General Abdul Moeed, attending as the chief guest.

A large number of civil and military officers, representatives of law enforcement agencies, heads of universities and colleges, students, and NGOs members participated in the event. The ceremony commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran. In his opening remarks, the Regional Director of ANF Punjab welcomed the attendees and highlighted the agency’s efforts and achievements in combating drug abuse to create a drug-free society.

This year, the Punjab Regional Directorate disposed of approximately 15 tonnes of narcotics, including heroin, hashish, ice (crystal meth), cocaine, ecstasy tablets, liquor, and other precursor chemicals.

Furthermore, ANF Punjab registered 511 cases against drug traffickers during the year. The Anti-Narcotics Special Court Punjab sentenced 69 convicts to life imprisonment and handed down severe punishments to 238 others.

The purpose of the annual drug destruction event was to reaffirm the commitment to fighting drugs abuse and its spread in collaboration with the general public. The active participation of civil society alongside government institutions is crucial to overcoming this menace.

Speaking at the event, Punjab Anti-Narcotics Force DG Major General Abdul Moeed stated that despite limited resources and manpower, the ANF remains steadfast in its indiscriminate crackdown on drug traffickers. He appreciated the invaluable support of Pakistan Rangers, police, customs, and other law enforcement agencies in this national mission.

Additionally, he emphasised the ongoing awareness campaigns aimed at reducing drug consumption. Since September last year, ANF has been conducting a nationwide campaign to protect educational institutions from the scourge of drugs. So far, awareness programmes have been held in over 100 universities, with plans to reach 150 more institutions by April 30, 2025.

The seized drugs destroyed were either intended for domestic consumption or for smuggling abroad. ANF and other law enforcement personnel risked their lives to intercept these illegal substances.

Pakistan remains committed to adhering to international laws and United Nations conventions on drug control. At the conclusion of the ceremony, commendation certificates were distributed among individuals who played a vital role in ANF’s fight against drugs abuse.
