Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Monem Zafar called on Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon to discuss the rising graph of fatal traffic incidents.
Speaking on the occasion, the JI leader expressed grave concerns over the situation and said that unfortunately tankers, dumpers and trailers run on the streets freely while defying their specific timings.
It seems that easily available bail option and lenient punishments make a section of heavy drivers free from the fear of the law, he said. Usually, the drivers of the heavy vehicles are seemed unaware of traffic rules and are not holding a driving licence.
The two sides discussed the alarming number of deaths in traffic incidents, prolonged traffic jams and dismal performance of the traffic police. Zafar suggested that the performance of the traffic police could be improved with the help of union councils. He also suggested devising a traffic management system on all levels. He also stressed the need for early completion of the safe city project.
He urged the IGP to take concrete measures to regulate the traffic in the mega city. In this regard, he asked the IGP to ease the process of licence issuance. He was of the view that QinQchi rickshaws should be made to strictly follow the parking rules in the city.
Similarly, he maintained, the roads of the city should be purged of encroachments. He said that the mega city couldn’t bear any more adventure or divide among it—sponsored by any political party.
On the occasion, the IGP briefed the JI delegation about the ongoing measures that had been taken to address the issue of heavy traffic and accidents. He welcomed the suggestions by the JI delegation led by Monem Zafar. Saifuddin advocate, the head of the Public Aid Committee and the leader of the opposition in the city council, JI leaders Muslim Pervez and Raja Arif accompanied Monem Zafar during the visit.
