The rapid spread of false narratives has fuelled religious conflicts, deepened social divisions, and undermined trust in democratic processes. This environment erodes public confidence in our institutions and disrupts the fabric of our society. The consequences of unchecked misinformation are profound. It has the potential to influence voter behaviour, manipulate public opinion, and incite violence. The absence of effective measures to counteract false information leaves the populace vulnerable to propaganda, thereby compromising the integrity of our democratic processes.
While the government has initiated legislation to combat the spread of false narratives online, experts argue that these efforts are insufficient and lag behind the incredibly rapid dissemination of misinformation. There is an urgent need for comprehensive strategies that include not only stricter laws but also public awareness campaigns about the dangers of fake news, educational reforms, and greater transparency from digital platforms.
