This letter refers to the editorial ‘A year of chaos’ (February 8, 2025), published on the first anniversary of the now- infamous February 8, 2024 general elections. The main players in those elections were the veterans who have dominated the political scene for decades. Quite predictably, the results were not much different from the past. This includes the performance of the government that came into being after those elections, barring some changes on the economic scene which appear to be down to the appointment of a new finance minister.
The real solution to our national problems could be strict accountability, bringing back at least part of the looted wealth and the formation of meritorious governments but, unfortunately, there seems to be no visible movement in that direction. At least, not with the urgency that our desperate situation demands.
