HARIPUR: The district and sessions judge Haripur, Shehnaz Hameed Khatak, on Tuesday visited the beads craft centre for inmates at the Haripur Central Jail.

She was accompanied by Additional District Judge Abdul Wahab Qureshi, Deputy Superintendent Syed Akhtar Hussain Shah and the jail staff. The superintendent Hamid Azam Khan briefed the district judge about the beads craft centre, total strength of learners and purpose and economic benefits the inmates were drawing. He said that the jail administration was running the beads craft centre for inmates with the technical support of Human Development Organization HDO that has not only set up the training centre but also providing free-of-cost raw material used for bead crafting. “The income generated through the sale of jewelry, decoration items, lady purses, bangles and rosaries made of colorful beads directly goes to the pocket of artisans by 100 percent,” he said, adding that the inmates were not only bearing their day to day expenses but also sent the income back to their families.

The district judge appreciated the efforts of the jail department for imparting training of different vocations to the inmates and expressed the hope that such activities would help the prisoners return to society as productive and law-abiding citizens.

The HDO had launched the beads craft centres in Haripur, Mansehra, Abbottabad and Battagram with an integrated approach of providing mental health & psychosocial support with skill development for livelihood.
