11,877 posts abolished under rightsizing plan

ISLAMABAD: The Cabinet Committee on Rightsizing of the Federal Government was informed on Monday that 29 ministries and one constitutional body have so far confirmed the abolition of 11,877 posts, besides declaring 4,660 as dying posts, which will cease to exist when they fall vacant.

A meeting of the committee, chaired by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb, was held at the Finance Division to review progress on the implementation of rightsizing measures across federal ministries. The meeting also deliberated on the rightsizing plan for the Ministry of Railways.

The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Finance and Revenue Ali Parvez Malik, members of the National Assembly, federal secretaries, and senior officials from relevant ministries and divisions.

The Establishment Division briefed the committee, reporting confirmations from 29 ministries and one constitutional body on the abolition of the specified posts. The finance minister commended the ministries and departments for their efforts in implementing the committee’s decisions and ensuring progress on rightsizing initiatives.

The Ministry of Railways presented a comprehensive overview of its rightsizing measures, revealing that out of 95,859 sanctioned posts, 17,101 have already been abolished, while 5,695 are in the process of being eliminated. Additionally, plans are underway to abolish 15,000 more posts as part of the ongoing initiative to optimise resources and enhance operational efficiency.

The presentation emphasised aligning the ministry’s functions with its core mandate by reducing redundancies and modernising Pakistan Railways to ensure effective and efficient operations.

The committee decided to refer the matter to the Sub-Committee on Rightsizing for further review and implementation of the proposed measures. The meeting concluded with a directive to continue implementing rightsizing initiatives across federal ministries in a phased manner to achieve improved efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainable policy outcomes.
