PARACHINAR: With the arrival of essential goods, the prices for vegetables and fruits have dropped significantly, with tomatoes decreasing from Rs600 to Rs150 per kilogram and onions from Rs600 to Rs250 per kilogram.
After a prolonged disruption in transportation routes due to security concerns, more than 70 vehicles carrying essential goods reached Parachinar a day earlier, bringing much-needed relief to the residents of the region.
However, while the arrival of food supplies has provided some relief, the situation remains dire as the area continues to face a shortage of fuel, with residents still struggling due to a lack of petrol and diesel supplies. As a result, people are forced to travel on foot, covering long distances to access basic necessities.
For nearly four months, the main roads connecting Parachinar to the Afghan border and other parts of the district have remained closed due to violent clashes. This blockade has led to a severe shortage of essential items, including food, gas, and other daily necessities, affecting over a hundred villages in the lower and upper parts of the Kurram district. Although a few convoys had brought supplies in the past, the volume was insufficient for the large population.
Local shopkeepers have reported that their goods spoiled while waiting for the convoys, and the cost of transport also increased due to the prolonged delay.
