Three acquitted in drug smuggling case
PESHAWAR: Additional District and Sessions Judge Nadia Syed on Saturday acquitted three individuals in an alleged drug smuggling case due to a lack of evidence.
The accused were represented by Advocate Ameer Junaid, who was arrested by the Excise Police in connection with smuggling of drugs worth millions of rupees.
The counsel for the accused argued that there was no solid proof to substantiate the charges against his clients.
The prosecution alleged that on January 20, 2022, the accused, including Nadeem Shahid, Abdullah, and Sajjad Hussain, attempted to smuggle drugs in a vehicle, which was intercepted by the Excise Police. The police claimed to have substantial evidence against the suspects, which led to their arrest. However, the counsel stated that the police had failed to prove from whom the drugs were seized or whether the drugs were recovered from a single individual or multiple suspects.
He also noted discrepancies in the police’s statements saying that the Excise Police did not provide a daily diary report from the team that conducted the raid. After hearing both sides, the judge acquitted the accused due to lack of proof.
