In defence of teachers
Back in August, there were reports that the Punjab government has initiated the privatisation of thousands of public schools across the province. Some argue that this move will help the provincial government to lower the burden on the exchequer and improve the quality of education. However, I think that this decision shows the higher authorities’ lack of interest in resolving the issues faced by ordinary people. The provision of basic health, education and other facilities is the responsibility of the government. Those at the helm of affairs have failed to reform the education system.
The teachers are disrespected and are entangled with other responsibilities like the distribution of Ramzan packages, census taking, elections and other administrative duties. They are ignored and disrespected at every step. They are deprived of promotions and other facilities. There is a dire need to introduce reforms to improve the quality of education instead of handing over this crucial public good to the private school mafia. This includes addressing the concerns of government school teachers. Feedback from teachers will also be of great benefit when it comes to the success of education reforms.
