PESHAWAR: Health professionals have expressed concern over the shortage of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) injections, essential for treating stroke patients, in major hospitals, including Lady Reading Hospital (LRH).
Speaking at a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club on World Stroke Day, Dr Ayesha Zafar, Head of the Neurology Department at LRH, and Dr Asadullah Khan highlighted the increasing incidence of strokes, attributing it to unhealthy lifestyles characterized by high-fat diets, lack of exercise, and sedentary habits.
They said that strokes could disable individuals as they lead to a sudden loss of function in one part of the body, making immediate medical intervention crucial.Dr Ayesha Zafar stressed the importance of rehabilitation for stroke-affected body parts and urged that anyone experiencing a stroke should be transported to a medical facility without delay.
Unfortunately, she added, TPA injections which were critical in effectively treating strokes were currently unavailable in several major hospitals, including LRH.The neurologists urged the government to ensure a steady supply of these life-saving injections.
