PCB revamps selection committee
LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has restructured its national selection committee, bringing in former cricketers to lead the way in shaping the future of the team. The new members are former fast bowler Aqib Javed, ex-captain Azhar Ali, and umpire Aleem Dar.
Aqib Javed, who is expected to take on the role of convener, will oversee the operations of the committee, ensuring smooth collaboration and decision-making. Azhar Ali, who has expressed interest in youth development, will likely play a dual role, not only contributing to team selection but also focusing on nurturing young talent for the future. Aleem Dar, the former ICC elite umpire, brings his vast knowledge and experience of international cricket to the committee, offering an objective perspective on team composition.
Asad Shafiq, a long-standing member of the selection panel, will continue to contribute his insights and maintain consistency within the group. Hasan Cheema, a respected cricket analyst, is expected to provide a data-driven approach to player assessment and strategy, enhancing the committee’s decision-making process.
The restructuring follows the resignation of former captain Mohammad Yousuf, who stepped down from his role in the previous selection committee. His departure prompted the PCB to expand and reform the committee, ensuring a blend of experience and innovation. With these new appointments, the PCB aims to create a more streamlined and collaborative approach to team selection. The changes also mean that, going forward, coaches will no longer have a say in squad selection, giving the selectors full autonomy over decisions.
