President calls for modern education

President Mamnoon Hussain on Saturday urged youth to acquire modern and scientific education to compete with the people living in other parts of the world.

He was addressing the 10th convocation of the Islamic International University at the Jinnah Convention Centre here as the chief guest.

Noted among those in attendance were Higher Education Commission chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, and IIU Rector Dr. Masoom Yasinzai and President Dr. Ahmed Yousif Al-Draiweesh.

The president stressed the need for curriculum reforms and urged scholars and researchers to find solution to the problems facing the Ummah. He said Islam preaches peace, security and brotherhood but certain misguided and bigoted elements have tainted the image of this great religion due to flawed thoughts and acts.

The president added that such elements were a scar on the face of humanity.

He said extremist tendencies and terrorism had inflicted huge sufferings and pain to the humanity and therefore, the time had come to counter them collectively.

Emphasising the role of universities in nation building, the president urged the media organisations in the Islamic world to effectively highlight the challenges facing the Ummah.

He expressed the hope that the IIU would continue working for the revival of the past glory of Islam in the world besides promoting global peace and solidarity.

Mamnoon Hussain congratulated students along with their parents on the completion of the degree and doctoral programmes and said he was hopeful that they would become a real asset for the nation in future.

He also urged the IIU authorities to encourage a culture of research and studies and adopt a stringent mechanism so that plagiarism in doctorate programmes should not take place.
