Senate panel proposes digitisation of Safe City project

Committee recommended providing details of crimes occurring in Islamabad territory and steps taken by ICT for prevention of such crimes

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Interior on Thursday, while expressing satisfaction over the working of the Safe City project, suggested the project be digitalised to cope with modern demands.

The committee also recommended providing details of crimes occurring in Islamabad territory and the steps taken by ICT for the prevention of such crimes.

The Senate Committee on Interior held a meeting with its Chairman Senator Faisal Saleem Rehman in the chair at Pakistan Secretariat, where a briefing was given on the workings of the Safe City Command and Control Centre and its effectiveness in combating modern-era crimes.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi informed the Senate panel that the Safe City project is the brainchild of Nadra, adding that it was established and operated by Nadra until 2019 and is currently being managed by the Islamabad Police.

The Safe City project was established to monitor law and order situation in the city and ensure the quality of life for the residents of Islamabad.

The sanctioned strength for the Safe City project was around 463, and as of now, 38 technical posts are vacant, which will be filled soon.

The committee recommended that vacant posts should be filled as the department holds critical importance.

The IGP further added that ICT is working to reshape the Safe City into a Smart City Project by keeping in view the needs of modern time.

The meeting was attended by Senator Irfan-ul-Haq Siddiqui, Senator Shahadat Awan, Senator Saifullah Abro, Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, Senator Palwasha Muhammad Zai Khan, Senator Jam Saifullah Khan, Special Secretary to the Ministry of Interior Waqas Ali Mehmood, Inspector General ICT Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi and other senior officials from the Ministry of Interior.
