White elephants
Successive governments have been abusing executive powers by appointing cronies at high-level posts in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and in the process destroying them. Today all SOEs are white elephants.
The unfortunate reality is that these political public officeholders have no problem in choosing the right person to run their private business empires which have expanded exponentially, while SOEs are being destroyed. Pakistan is neither Afghanistan, nor Somalia, nor Rwanda. It has abundance of best qualified individuals in almost every field. Men like Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf, Asif Zardari, Nawaz Sharif, etc, have benefited from the vast opportunities offered to them by the country. Unfortunately, they have not paid back to this country that they had taken an oath to deliver.
