Habib Jalib: a man with conviction behind his words
Islamabad
The National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage (Lok Virsa) hosted a special programme to pay tribute to famous poet and political activist Habib Jalib here on Monday. Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani was the chief guest on the occasion.
The programme included screening of a short film on 'Habib Jalib', recitation of poetry and comments by Mujahid Barelvi who has written two books, 'Jalib Jalib' and 'Jalib and Ghalib'. Close friends of the legendary poet also spoke about his political struggle. The event also featured a special dance performance by Indu Mitha's group.
Habib Jalib was born as Habib Ahmad on March 24, 1928, in a village near Hoshiarpur, British India. He migrated to Pakistan after the partition. He was a progressive writer and soon started to grab the audience with his enthusiastic recitation of poetry. He wrote in plain language, adopted a simple style and addressed common people and issues. But the conviction behind his words, the music of his voice and his emotional energy coupled with the sensitivity of the socio-political context is what stirred the audience. Jalib was banned from official media but he remained undeterred. He rather started a tirade against the tyranny with more resolution.
Speaking on the occasion, Raza Rabbani said that Jalib was a great poet and he still lives in the hearts of the people. “He stood against dictatorship of Ayub Khan and Zia ul Haq. He motivated masses through his poetry for restoration of democracy in the country. We salute him for his sacrifices for the democratic system in Pakistan," he said.
In her welcoming remarks, Lok Virsa Executive Director Dr. Fouzia Saeed paid tribute to the legendry poet. "Jalib reflects people’s narratives. We are thankful to all those who gathered here today to join us on this occasion”.
Dr. Fouzia Saeed said that Lok Virsa’s mandate has been to preserve, document and promote cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible. “The earlier focus had been more on the first two aspects. Currently, the focus is on the promotion of folk heritage of Pakistan in a way that is relevant to people of all ages and backgrounds and to provide more meaning, depth and rootedness in life. The promotion of folk heritage will also create more space for expressing diversity within our culture, asserting cultural autonomy and dignity and could contribute towards being a stronger democracy and a stronger nation".
Former senator Afrasiab Khattak and Hasil Bizenjo also attended the programme and paid rich tributes to Habib Jalib for his valuable contribution in creating awareness among masses about their rights.
A large number of people from different walks of life attended the function at the beautiful surroundings of Lok Virsa. They enjoyed thrilling performances rendered by Indu Mitha group.
