Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday told the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the city’s 25 towns to expedite development projects and maintain cleanliness throughout the metropolis.

Shah issued these directives during a meeting he chaired at the CM House. He stressed the importance of effectively serving the city’s residents by leveraging the elected local bodies, including union councils, towns and the KMC.

“We now have elected local bodies in place, and it’s their responsibility to work within their domains to benefit the people and the city,” he pointed out.

Property tax survey

Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani told the meeting that bids have been received in response to a question about the ongoing GIS-based door-to-door property tax survey.

Ghani said that the technical evaluation of these bids has been completed and shared with the World Bank for review. Once approved, financial bids are expected to be opened by the end of this month, with the project likely to be awarded by the second week of next month, he added.

Planning & Development Minister Nasir Shah elaborated that the GIS-based Management Information System, along with a smartphone app for the Urban Immovable Property Tax Survey, is under an international competitive bidding process in line with the WB’s procurement regulations. He said the project would commence as soon as the WB gives the nod.

The CM directed the P&D and LG departments to expedite the property tax survey, emphasising that increasing local bodies’ resources is crucial for the city’s planning and development.

Development projects

The chief executive directed Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab to expedite the formalities for the six key development projects for the city that have already received approval.

They include the rehabilitation of the Shadab Football Ground, Block 11, FB Area; the development of a park and IT centre in Shadman Town; the rehabilitation of the Baldia Stadium; the construction of Memon Goth Road; the construction of multi-purpose community centres in various UCs; and the development of a community centre in District Malir.

Wahab made the assurance before the CM that two community centre projects have been approved, with land acquisition issues for the remaining ones being

resolved.

Public amenities

The CM ordered the LG department to initiate development works across the city’s 25 towns. He noted that Rs10.43 billion has been allocated for these projects under the Competitive & Liveable City of Karachi project.

He stressed the importance of maintaining streets, roads and public spaces, urging the towns to effectively utilise the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board’s services. He also highlighted the need to repair or instal street lights across the city’s towns, ensuring that all public spaces are well-lit and safe.

“I want the streets and roads to be kept in good condition, with parks and public places well-developed and street lights functioning. It’s essential for the well-being and safety of Karachi’s

residents.”
