The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) suspended the membership of MPA Irum Farooqui for violating organisational rules, said a notification issued by the party on Saturday.

The decision, taken by the Rabita Committee, was endorsed by the party’s chief, Altaf Hussain.

However, inside sources said Farooqui’s membership had been suspended for not toeing the party’s policy. She even bypassed her seniors in terms of issuing her own policy statement, they said.  The MQM’s policy was issued by only the Rabita Committee with the consent of the party chief.

in reply to a question if Farooqui’s membership had been suspended for paving the way for her to join the Pak Sarzameen Party in view of rumours doing the rounds for some time that she might join the PSP, the sources said her departure would not make any difference as she was an albatross rather than a positive feature of the party. Secondly, they said, she spent most of her time in the US, ignoring the party affairs and rules.

In September 2014 Farooqui had announced her resignation on Twitter, saying that she could not work with “a party of opportunists”. However, weeks later, she rejoined the Muttahida, saying that she had withdrawn her resignation decision after the MQM chief assured her of action against “opportunist elements” within the party.
