Russia-Ukraine talks

Ukrainian President Zelensky’s focus on solidifying international opposition to Russia is understandable, but it risks becoming a double-edged sword. While designed to strengthen Ukraine’s hand, it may inadvertently harden Russia’s stance and make them even more reluctant to negotiate. The exclusion of Russia from the recently concluded Summit on Peace in Ukraine is another critical shortcoming. Lasting peace can only be achieved through a dialogue that includes all warring parties. Initiatives like prisoner exchanges and the grain corridor were possible precisely because they involved both Ukraine and Russia. By excluding Moscow, mobilizing anti-Russian sentiment, and consolidating international support for Ukraine, the summit might be perceived as mere provocation by some.

This could not only harden Russia’s stance but also alienate potential mediators advocating for a pragmatic approach to conflict resolution. The upcoming US election and escalating nuclear threats only add to the uncertainty and make the prospect of a peaceful resolution even more precarious. The international community must prioritize inclusive diplomacy if we are to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine. Future efforts need to move beyond symbolic gestures of solidarity and engage both Ukraine and Russia in direct talks that address their core concerns.
