PESHAWAR: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on Wednesday praised the Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) Mardan Medical Complex (MMC) for facilitating patients, especially the Afghan refugees.
The appreciation was expressed as a delegation from the UNHCR Peshawar, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Islamabad, and the KOICA visited the MTI MMC to inspect equipment provided for the Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab).
Kofi Dowommo, head of the UNHCR Peshawar Sub Office, led the delegation which included Programme Officer Gulam Khamidov, Security Officer Helder, Assistant Public Health Officer Dr Amanullah, Programme Assistant Laila Mukaram, Senior Engineering Associate Faraz Ahmed, and Senior External Relations Officer Hyjein Lee, Selina and Faisal Azam Khan from the UNHCR Islamabad Office.
The Korean Embassy was represented by First Secretary Sooyun Gong and Political and Economic Analyst Kyohee Kim.Program Officer Yeonhyeoong Joh, Multilateral Project Specialist Syed Bilal, and Young Professional Maryam Raza represented KOICA.
The delegation met Dr Tariq Mahmood, Hospital Director of MTI MMC. Present there were Azhar Khan, Secretary to the Board of Governors of MTI Mardan, Director of Finance Muhammad Sheraz, head of the Cardiology Department Assistant Professor Dr. Noorul Hadi, Manager of Procurement Muhammad Khalid, Manager of Information Technology Mohsin Ali, Manager of Quality Assurance Hameed Zeb, and Communication and Outreach Officer Ziaul Islam Yusufzai.
The UNHCR delegation discussed various matters of mutual interest with the hospital management, focusing on the healthcare services provided to the general public, particularly Afghan refugees. They praised the MMC efforts to facilitate patients, especially Afghan refugees.
Dr Tariq Mahmood provided a briefing on MMC’s infrastructure, equipment, specialties, and the range of healthcare services offered in the Outpatient Department, Accident and Emergency, and Inpatient wards.
He appreciated the support extended by UNHCR and its partners, which had been crucial in providing various diagnostic and medical equipment to the facility.He highlighted the MMC’s role in serving both the local population and Afghan refugees residing in different camps in the Mardan Division.
Dr. Mahmood emphasized the importance of continued support from UNHCR and its partners to enable MMC to provide high-standard healthcare to a larger number of patients.He noted the equipment provided to the Cath Lab by UNHCR, the Republic of Korea, KOICA, and their partners is essential for efficiently operating the facility and addressing cardiovascular complications among patients.
Kofi Dowommo said that UNHCR would consider the hospital’s requests and discuss them with its partners to ensure ongoing collaboration for better patient care.Dr Noorul Hadi acknowledged the significant contribution of the UNHCR, which has provided a C-Arm, ABG Machine, two ECG machines, 10 Infusion Pumps, 30 Syringe Pumps, three Crash Carts, and an ACT Machine for the hospital’s Cath Lab.
The delegation concluded their visit with an inspection of the Echocardiography and ECG section in the Outpatient Department and the Cath Lab, where they reviewed the equipment provided by the UNHCR.
