Tension gripped the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) on Saturday after members of two student organisations clashed with each other at the public health facility’s physiotherapy college.

Hospital sources said members of both organisations attacked each other, resulting in injuries to patients’ attendants and hospital staff. The sources said that the injured are being treated at the hospital’s emergency ward.

Two days ago the security guard of ward No. 4 had been subjected to violence by student organisation members at the JPMC. Doctors said that ward No. 4 is where cancer patients are treated.

Besides the security guard, hospital staff had also been subjected to violence by the student organisation members. The CCTV camera footage of the incident has also surfaced.

After Saturday’s clash, a case was registered against members of the Peoples Student Federation (PSF) on the complaint of an injured member of the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT).

Police said the case has been registered against more than 10 nominees and 25 to 30 unidentified suspects. Officials said that the recent clash was the result of tensions brewing between the two student organisations for several days.

They said that members of one organisation stormed various wards of the hospital on Saturday subjecting hospital staff and patients’ attendants to violence.

Efforts are under way to apprehend the nominated suspects, they added.
