Karachi Traffic Police DIG Ahmed Nawaz Cheema, taking notice of illegal checking at the Mehmoodabad Traffic Section, has suspended 17 personnel, including the section officer and the record keeper.

Officials said on Saturday that DIG Ahmed Nawaz at repeated times had ordered that illegal checking be not conducted in the form of groups and public be not harassed. He said that on Saturday he conducted a survey and during the surprise visit, the officials of Mehmoodabad Traffic Section were carrying out illegal checking on the Korangi Expressway and Korangi Causeway, a practice which had been repeatedly prohibited.

DIG Cheema suspended 17 police officers, including the section officer and record keeper of the Mehmoodabad Traffic Section, and directed them to report to the Traffic Police Line. Orders have been issued and departmental proceedings initiated against them.

Moreover, the DSP of the Korangi Traffic Division has been issued with a show-cause notice.

DIG Cheema in his earlier meeting had said that in the Karachi Traffic Police, all officers and personnel have been informed that they will not stop any vehicle without a challan Officer and the challan officer will not fine any motorist without a body-worn camera, and while a ticket is being issued, the camera will be turned on and the challan will be filmed.

The DIG said people should not be harassed in any place on the pretext of challan. He warned that strict disciplinary action will be taken against them if this is done without the supervision of any officer through a systematic blockade.

On the orders of DIG Ahmed Nawaz, traffic awareness camps are being organised at various places across the city from April 29, 2024, in which public awareness would be provided about the traffic signal and one-way violations and stop line restriction.

The traffic awareness camps will be set up at Teen Talwar, the Saudi Consulate traffic light signal, Hafiz-Ittehad signal, PIDC signal and the CSD signal in District South.

In the East district, they will be set up at the National Stadium’s traffic light signal and Noorani Kebab signal. In District Malir, a camp will be set up along the Model Colony cemetery, and in the Korangi district a camp will be set up at Godam Chowrangi.

The public is requested to follow the traffic signal and stop line rules during the journey, and stop vehicles a little behind the stop line before the zebra crossing.

“A little haste can lead you to lifelong disability or death. Prove to be a law-abiding citizen by following traffic rules.”
