Inadequate cleanliness arrangements in District South irk commissioner

Newly appointed Karachi commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi inspected the cleanliness situation in different parts of District South and District East on the third day of Eidul Fitr on Friday.

In District South, he took note of the absence of staff and inadequate cleanliness at some locations. He directed the South deputy commissioner to monitor and improve the situation.

He instructed that administrative officers should be provided access to the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board's (SSWMB) portal to monitor staff attendance and performance effectively.

SSWMB Managing Director Imtiaz Ali Shah briefed the commissioner on the occasion about the cleanliness system in the city.

South Deputy Commissioner Alaf Sarwar and East Deputy Commissioner Altaf Sheikh also accompanied the commissioner during the visit.

The commissioner instructed both the deputy commissioners to take measures for monitoring and improving cleanliness work in the city.

In District South, some 1,200 personnel are assigned cleanliness work, but most of them were found absent due to the Eid holidays. The commissioner expressed dissatisfaction at the situation and ordered immediate action.

Following the commissioner's directives, 511 absent workers from District South were called for duty.

Meanwhile, the SSWMB managing director informed the commissioner that on Friday, the third day of Eid, 856 personnel from District South participated in cleanliness work, and overall, 750 tonnes of garbage were lifted from various dumping sites in the district.

During the South district tour, Naqvi visited the Empress Market, Soldier Bazaar, Jubilee Cinema, Lea Market, Jamila Pumping Station and inspected the cleanliness situation.

The commissioner ordered the cleanliness work around Garden Police Lines and the Sui Defence Office to be completed within three days. He emphasised that garbage should be lifted daily from garbage dumps and properly disposed of on landfill sites.

He instructed the deputy commissioners to visit garbage transfer stations and landfill sites in the city and take measures for improving the waste collection system.
