PESHAWAR: Police in the provincial capital carried out a special campaign against aerial firing before Eidul Fitr that helped saved many precious lives, an official said on Friday

“Due to the effective strategy and efforts of all officers and jawans of the Peshawar Police, we have successfully curbed the menace of aerial firing on the chand raat,” Capital City Police Officer Ashfaq Anwar said. He added that the police have not received any report of injury or death from any hospital during the festive occasion which was an achievement of the force.

“Besides, we remained vigilant against skidding, one wheeling in Hayatabad and other areas that also claim lives on festive occasions,” said the CCPO.Bringing an end to the menace of celebratory fire had become a serious challenge for police as well as government and the society after the practice has claimed innumerable lives and left scores of others paralyzed in the last many years.

Many have already suggested legislation by the government for introducing strictest laws to ensure due punishment to the violators by the courts. Currently there is no major punishment for the practice that can claim lives and leave people paralyzed for the rest of their life.

Police said they had already alerted the cops to go after those resorting for aerial fire in any part of the provincial capital which helped reduce the menace this year.
