Akram urges Shaheen to improve death bowling
LAHORE: Former Pakistan cricket captain and legendary pace bowler, Wasim Akram, has voiced concerns over Shaheen Shah Afridi’s performance in the death overs during the recent Pakistan Super League (PSL) season.
With the ICC T20 World Cup on the horizon, Akram emphasized the need for Afridi to enhance his effectiveness in crucial stages of the game. During PSL 9, Afridi, who led the Lahore Qalandars, showcased his wicket-taking abilities by securing 14 dismissals in nine matches at an average of 22.14. However, Akram pointed out Afridi’s struggle to contain runs and deliver under pressure in the final overs.
“I think in this PSL, he [was] not able to bowl well in the death overs,” remarked Akram during a discussion on a private TV. Despite Afridi’s success in taking wickets, Akram stressed the importance of Afridi refining his skills, particularly when facing the challenge of closing out innings effectively. The Sultan of Swing highlighted the significance of Afridi’s role as Pakistan’s T20I captain and a key bowler in the team’s setup.
Moreover, Akram expressed disappointment over Afridi’s approach with the new ball, noting instances where he bowled half volleys instead of focusing on generating early breakthroughs. “Even with the new ball, we all were watching it together, he was bowling half volleys,” Akram remarked, urging Afridi to return to his strengths and execute his bowling plans more effectively.
As Pakistan prepares for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, Akram’s critique serves as a timely reminder for Afridi to address his shortcomings and elevate his performance, particularly in high-pressure situations such as the death overs. With Akram’s invaluable insights and guidance, Afridi has an opportunity to refine his skills and make a significant impact on Pakistan’s campaign in the upcoming tournament.
