LAHORE: A family court in Lahore has sentenced a man to seven months in jail and imposed a fine of Rs500,000 for contracting a second marriage without obtaining permission from the first wife.Judge Adnan Liaqat of the family court announced the decision on the application of the man’s first wife. Barrister Usman Rashid Cheema appeared in the court on behalf of the petitioner. The court said in its written order that Muhammad Aurangzeb had contracted a second marriage without seeking permission from his first wife to do so. The order read that it was imperative to seek a written permission from the first wife for entering into a second marriage as per the law and the accused had committed a violation of the section 6 (5) of the Muslim Family Law Ordinance. The court handed down seven-month imprisonment to the man along with a fine of Rs500,000. If the accused did not pay the fine, he would have to undergo an additional one-month imprisonment.
