COTTON: Bt cotton has been genetically modified by the insertion of one or more genes from a common soil. These genes encode for the production of insecticidal proteins, and thus, genetically transformed plants produce one or more toxins as they grow.
The genes that have been inserted into cotton produce toxins that are limited in activity almost exclusively to caterpillar pests. The results of the first year of the National Coordinated Varietal Trial (NCVT) for 2023 have been announced, with the cotton variety BT Cyto 547 from the Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI) Multan securing the top position in Punjab. Dr Muhammad Naveed Afzal, the director of CCRI Multan, has received congratulations from various quarters for this significant achievement of the institution. During the year 2023, four zones in Punjab including Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Multan, and Bahawalpur, cultivated 24 different coded types of cotton from both public and private institutions.
The CCRI Multan’s cotton variety Bt Cyto-547 stands superior production qualities, securing the top spot. This variety exhibits strong resistance to whitefly, glyphosate, and high productivity, yielding between 55 to 60 maunds per acre when cultivated after wheat until April 15.
