NA passes resolution on women’s day amid opposition protest
The resolution directed all departments concerned to show zero tolerance towards perpetrators and inciters of crimes against women
ISLAMABAD: The opposition members in the National Assembly (NA) Friday opposed a resolution, passed by the House with majority vote, commemorating the International Women’s Day and honouring the meritorious services of women of Pakistan, especially Benazir Bhutto.
A member of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), Omar Ayub Khan, who has also been nominated as the opposition leader in the House, while opposing the resolution, referred to imprisoned woman leaders of the PTI including Bushra Bibi and Dr Yasmin Rashid.
Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq noted with regret that without listening to the content, the opposition opted to oppose a very important resolution, which should have been carried beyond politics. He also observed that the opposition had not submitted its own resolution and instead resorted to blocking a tribute to the legendary daughters of the nation. He advised the opposition to realise importance of the matter and instead of opposing for the sake of opposition, should add its voice for promotion, protection and well-being of women of Pakistan. “I wish you should have moved and supported the resolution,” the speaker said adding that Benazir Bhutto was the first elected prime minister of the Islamic world, and she had been paid tribute for her unwavering dedication to democracy, women empowerment, human rights, social justice and equitable society. The resolution moved by Sehar Kamran said that Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was an icon of women struggle, courage and resilience in the face of challenges. It noted that Benazir Bhutto was a role model for women and mothers in general and women politicians and parliamentarians in particular. The resolution pledged to uphold her legacy by championing policies that empower women, ensure equitable opportunities and eradicate gender discrimination.
Recognising the significant potential and contribution of women to all spheres of life, the resolution emphasised the importance of continued and sustained efforts to remove barriers and obstacles that hinder the realisation of women’s full potential. It called upon the government and the private sector to invest more in women, enabling them to make even greater contribution to progress and development of Pakistan.
The resolution directed all departments concerned to show zero tolerance towards perpetrators and inciters of crimes against women. It resolved to promote gender equality through legislative measures, education and awareness campaigns. The resolution also urged inclusion of women in decision-making processes at all levels, ensuring their meaningful participation in shaping policies and programmes that impact their lives.
